The Agarwal Hurricane June 18 2013
Our first special recipe goes out to Vineet “Hurricane” Agarwal, the winner of our unofficial Early Bird contest. In honor of Vineet, we set out to create a ReJiggered Hurricane. The traditional Hurricane is a popular drink in New Orleans made with rum, passion fruit juice, and grenadine. For a twist, we’re going to make a passion fruit and pomegranate syrup and infuse it with some basil.
We’ll start by adding equal parts passion fruit juice and pomegranate juice to a saucepan and bring it to a simmer. I like to let this reduce down by half to concentrate the flavors (about 30 minutes for 2 cups of liquid). During the last 10 minutes, we’ll add some basil and 1/4 cup of sugar. After it cools, we’ll strain out the basil and we’re ready to make our cocktail.
Pour light rum into the largest compartment of the ReJigger, followed by the passion fruit and pomegranate syrup in the next largest compartment. In the smallest compartment, we’ll add some fresh squeezed lime juice. Give that a good shake with ice and strain it into a chilled glass with ice. Enjoy!
